Hetzner AMD EPYC 2GB Cloud Benchmark

Hetzner is a reliable cloud and dedicated servers provider from Germany. They currently have datacentres in Germany and Finland. Visit Hetzner here.

Their products are ranging from Web Hosting, Cloud, Dedicated, Colocation, and Storage boxes.

Striving to be one of world’s best cloud providers, the company released instances powered with AMD EPYC 2nd generation Rome processors.

This special line up is coded CPX11, CPX21, CPX31, CPX41, and CPX51.

The plans start from €4.05 that comes with 2GB RAM, 2 EPYC vCPU, and 40GB either local nVME SSD or Ceph storage.

This article shows you how powerful is the AMD EPYC cloud server by Hetzner’s 2GB RAM plan.

Server Specs

All the three test results display basic server specs as following:

  • CPU model: AMD EPYC with IBPB
  • Number of cores: 2
  • CPU speed: 2495 MHz
  • CPU architecture: x86_64, 64-bit
  • CPU Flags: AES-NI enabled but AMD-V and VM-x disabled
  • RAM capacity: 2GB (around 1.9GB effective)
  • Storage space: 40GB (around 38GB effective)
  • Virtualization: KVM
  • Kernel version: 5.4.0-39 generic
  • Server location: Falkenstein, Germany
  • Operating system: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (we chose during deployment)
  • SWAP: 2GB (we created)

CPU Performance

Both YABS and Bench Monster employ Geekbench v5 to do the CPU benchmark. Here’s the result:

Bench Monster also tests CPU performance in conjunction with IO performance actions such as bzip2, sha256, and md5sum. These are common cryptographic tasks employed to stress-test a server.

   sha256     : 124 MB/s
   md5sum     : 375 MB/s

The result is pretty much amazing considering the EPYC boasts 2×512 KB L2 cache and 1×8.0MB L3 cache.

Disk IO Speed

Bench Monster and Bench.sh test IO speed using a traditional DD command while YABS employs fio disk speed test to measure IOPS.

We can conclude that average Disk IO speed for this server is around 1.1 GB/s which is outstanding.

This is what expected from NVMe disk technology.

It is rare to achieve such a speedy IO performance on any other cloud providers recently.

The IOPS speed is also spectacular.

While many Web Hosting providers limit IO usage to 25MB/s to 50MB/s via Cloudlinux, you can enjoy the true freedom of moving your sites from shared to cloud environment.

Thanks to IOPS performance of 217.87 MB/s (4k block size), 2.24 GB/s (64k), 3.13 GB/s (512k), and 4.54 GB/s (1m).

RAM Speed

It’s very rare for users to pay attention to RAM speed.

Having a speedy RAM is useful to max out the overall server performance. Some sysadmins also prefer to use memory-based caching mechanisms like Redis, Varnish, or Memcached.

Here’s the performance we got:

   Avg. read  : 5257.3 MB/s

See how the disk IO speed is almost close to the RAM speed.

Network Speed

All the three scripts use different test mechanism to measure networking speed.

YABS uses iperf test, Bench Monster prefer to use Speedtest.net, and Bench.sh uses simple wget command.

This is good as per our perspective. We can see how fast the connection is throughout three different test methods.

In short, the server has fastest connections to most European countries. Connections to the US states are still good.

Conclusion

AMD EPYC becomes the most talked server-grade CPU to rival Intel Xeon.

Built based on the AMD’s Zen microarchitecture, EPYC is available cheaper than Xeon’s price but it offers better performance.

However, do customers (cloud users) really benefit from this processor? At this point we can say Yes.

The performance of Hetzner AMD EPYC cloud is really sleek, snappy, and powerful. The price point is also just perfect.
